Our Story

A new (2017) and exciting producer of Russian River Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir under the direction of longtime vintner Donald Patz. His three-decade association with Sonoma and Russian River Valley grape growers has given him access to some of the top vineyard sites in the valley. Utilizing these vineyard sites he and his team are crafting compelling Chardonnays and delicately perfumed Pinot Noirs.

We decided to make up a name that would represent our thoughts about Sonoma County/Russian River Valley since all our initially considered names had already been used! The process went something like this…

Sonoma = Oceans and Mountains

Oceans… MARItime

Mountains… MonTANA

It took longer than it looks. It turns out that this is a woman’s name. Not so much in the US but in some of the Latin countries and more oddly in Russia. Apparently, there was a popular song in Russia in the 1970’s or early 1980’s with the Maritana name that inspired its use.

After 29 vintages with his previous company Patz & Hall, Donald Patz moved on in May of 2017. It was a perfect moment to quit or take some time off. That’s not really his style. Mr. Patz hit the ground running on May 1 to implement a new wine brand. “I had some things I still wanted to do in the wine business. I love sharing my wines. This time being free to rethink and take my wines in a slightly different direction was exciting and refreshing!”

Mr. Patz decided to focus entirely on the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County as the source for his new winery. He’s got friends there. He immediately contacted Steve and Joe at Dutton Ranch as well as Charlie at Chenoweth Vineyards (among others) to see what might be available in 2017.  The grapes he came up with for this first vintage surprised even him! (see Vineyard Sources) The focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are Mr. Patz’s favorite varietals from the Russian River Valley.

Our goal with Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley region of Sonoma County is to make a wine that emphasizes the most intriguing part of this special grape variety – aroma. Of course, we want complex textures and flavors and beautiful color and all the other things that make up Pinot Noir from this region but for us the most haunting part of the Pinot Noir experience has always been that perfume!

We are looking to produce Chardonnays from the Russian River Valley that embody the spirit of this great growing region. We don’t want to deliver enormous amounts of heavy-handed new barrel character in any of our wines but have carefully selected sources of once-used barrels along with a small number of new barrels to frame the fruit and give it nuance. Above all we want our Chardonnays to demonstrate freshness and finesse as well as concentration and depth.

You may think you know all about the Russian River Valley and the style of wines that come from there, but the Maritana Vineyards’ wines are probably not what you think.

Mr. Patz had the grapes he wanted and needed a place to make the wines. A fortuitous lunch with Adam Lee of Siduri opened the door to using Sugarloaf Crush near Santa Rosa as a base for Maritana Vineyards. Sugarloaf Crush is the location for a number of small wine projects and has the equipment and staff to follow-through on the vision that Mr. Patz had in mind. In the end these wines will speak for themselves.

All Russian River Valley; Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; Donald Patz’s personal flair; fantastic vineyard sources; top winemaking facility – this is Mr. Patz’s new dream. We look forward to showing you the new wines beginning in September 2018.

Russian River Valley

Chardonnay & Pinot Noir

CHARDONNAY from the Russian River Valley. There is a lot of pear, apple, citrus to go with a gentle background note of lees & barrel spice. Has excellent acidity & presents a bright fully refreshing character.

CHARDONNAY with both a delicate and concentrated, aromatic and pure, rich and refreshing focusing more on the floral/mineral end of the spectrum rather than the tropical fruit end of Chardonnay.

NOT YET RELEASED. Coming in Spring of 2019.

CHARDONNAY with great precision on the palate and shimmering kumquat and mango fruitiness. The small amount of new oak used refocuses the wine on its mineral and spring flower characters.

NOT YET RELEASED. Coming in Spring of 2019.

PINOT NOIR with a lot of Pinot “perfume” as well as interesting fresh raspberry, cola and cherry notes. Sleek and aromatic. I’d love to try this wine with 10-15 years of bottle age.

NOT YET RELEASED. Coming in Spring of 2019.

Why We Love the Russian River Valley

Winemaker Donald Patz selected the Russian River Valley as the source for the new Maritana Vineyards wines because having worked with grapes from Mendocino to Monterey; from Napa Valley to the Sonoma Coast the Russian River Valley produced the wines he loved the most. There’s something wonderful and beautiful about the Russian River Valley. It’s very complex geologically with a number of different kinds of soils – it has both hillsides and valley floor vineyard sites – it has a long history of grape growing – it is physically a beautiful area – there is a great deal of human expertise growing and tending vineyards in the Russian River Valley – and the climate is ideal for our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Wines. We are glad to be a part of the Russian River Valley community of wineries.

Our 2018 Russian River Vineyard Sources

    • DUTTON RANCH – this is a collection of 80 vineyards and over 1200 acres. MARITANA VINEYARDS has the original planting at Shop Block 1967 and the most highly prized Hansen Hill. Superb Chardonnay growers. This is the cornerstone of the “La Rivière” Russian River Valley Chardonnay cuvée.
    • JENKINS RANCH – located in the hills to the SW of Sebastopol on perfect Gold Ridge Loam soils the Jenkins Ranch is lovingly farmed by the master vineyardist Charlie Chenoweth. Deeply flavored and complex wines are the result of both site and the vineyard work.
    • MARTAELLA VINEYARD – the home ranch for the Benovia Winery and planted with a number of clones of both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. MARITANA VINEYARDS is taking 3 different clones of Pinot Noir to form the core of the “Le Russe” Russian River Valley Pinot Noir cuvée. Perfumed and complex wines with great textures – it will deliver superb quality.
